The meeting was brief and just simply “Yes Wendy, you have alzheimers like your mum did”. With heightened emotions it feels like a sledge hammer hitting you even though you were fully prepared and expecting it.

The journey to know “What is going on”
I write this article because as time has gone on through researching and listening to parents and siblings in my situation; we all sound the same. We are confused by what we are living with.
Self care for the carer
This year with COVID and the slow but yet at times speedy decline in Wendy; has had me stop and take stock of what is going on. I am also a mother, a grandmother, daughter, wife, try to be a friend, and work 5-6 days a week.
10 days of COVID Lockdown in hospital
Wendy was having more days with of episodes of “low blood pressure” sometimes I would test her at these times with our home blood pressure reader and would find her blood to be about the same during these episodes as in just normal rest times.

The accident
The story came out that they had been in the local Westfield and on the travelator – which isn’t reommended for wheelcahirs and when the carer had gone to take Wendy’s wheelchair brakes off at the bottom, she had been pushed from behind, by a large lady which had resulted in her falling and grazing her leg badly. Leaving Wendy without a “driver” and toppling out of the wheelchair.
What is going on – too many changes.
The overriding thoughts I have been having for almost a year now, has been focused on trying to work out what has been going on with, Wendy in relation to her behavior, emotions, and cognitive abilities.
